How to Oil Your Hair Properly: A Simple Weekly Ritual

Applying AUMÉ Hair Treatment Oil as part of a weekly hair oiling ritual

Most of us grew up with Sunday champi: a bowl of warm oil, Ammi's hands, and a lecture about how our hair would thank us later. Hair oiling is one of the oldest beauty habits in Pakistan, yet very few of us were ever taught the actual steps. How much oil is too much? Should you leave it overnight? Why does it never seem to wash out?

This guide walks you through a simple weekly ritual that works for most hair types.

Why oil your hair at all?

Oils coat the hair shaft and help lock in moisture, which can leave hair feeling softer, smoother and less prone to dryness and breakage from combing. A gentle scalp massage also feels relaxing and helps you spread the oil evenly. Think of oiling as conditioning and care, not a miracle cure: its benefits come from doing it regularly.

What you need

  • A good hair oil (a blend lets you get the benefits of several oils at once)
  • A small bowl, if you like your oil warm
  • A wide-tooth comb
  • An old towel or shower cap
  • Your usual shampoo

Step 1: Start with dry, detangled hair

Gently comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb before you begin. Oil spreads more evenly through detangled hair, and you will lose fewer strands later.

Step 2: Warm the oil slightly

Warm oil spreads more easily. Place your bottle or a small bowl of oil in warm water for a minute, or simply rub a few drops between your palms. Always test the temperature on your wrist first: it should feel comfortably warm, never hot.

Step 3: Use less than you think

For shoulder-length hair, around one teaspoon (5 ml) is usually enough. Use a little more for long or very thick hair. Using too much is the most common oiling mistake, because it makes washing out difficult.

Step 4: Massage your scalp for 2–3 minutes

Part your hair into sections and apply a few drops along each parting. Using your fingertips, not your nails, massage in small circles across your scalp for two to three minutes. Keep the pressure gentle.

Step 5: Coat the lengths and ends

Run the remaining oil through the mid-lengths and ends, which are the oldest and driest parts of your hair. Loosely braid or tie your hair, and cover it with a shower cap or old towel if you like.

Step 6: Leave it in for 30 minutes, or overnight

Thirty minutes to two hours is plenty for most people. If you prefer an overnight treatment, cover your pillow with an old towel. There is no benefit in leaving oil in for days: wash it out within 24 hours.

Step 7: Wash it out the right way

Here is the trick most people miss: apply shampoo to dry, oiled hair first, work it in, and only then add water. Shampoo binds to the oil better this way. Rinse, then shampoo a second time if needed. Follow with conditioner on the lengths.

How often should you oil?

Once or twice a week suits most hair types. If your scalp gets oily quickly, stick to once a week and focus the oil on your lengths. If your hair is very dry, twice a week works well.

A quick note on sensitive scalps

If you have a sensitive scalp or are trying a new oil, do a small patch test behind your ear 24 hours before your first full use. Keep oil away from your eyes, and if you have a scalp condition, check with a doctor first.

Make it a ritual, not a chore

The best hair oiling routine is the one you actually keep. Pick a day, play some music, and give yourself twenty quiet minutes. Your hair, and probably your mood, will thank you.
