Walk into any Pakistani kitchen and you will find half the ingredients of a good hair oil: sarson ka tail, til, nariyal, kalonji, methi. Generations have used these for hair care long before shampoo adverts existed. Here is a plain-English guide to twelve of them, and why each one is worth having in your routine.
1. Mustard oil (sarson)
A warming, slightly pungent oil that has been used for scalp massage across South Asia for centuries. Its warmth makes it a classic choice for a winter champi.
2. Sesame oil (til)
Light and easy to spread, sesame oil is naturally rich in antioxidants. It helps the heavier oils in a blend glide through the hair more easily.
3. Coconut oil (nariyal)
One of the best-studied hair oils. Coconut oil is known for being able to penetrate the hair shaft, which helps reduce protein loss when hair is washed. It leaves hair soft and conditioned.
4. Castor oil
Thick, rich and glossy. Castor oil coats the hair and helps lengths look fuller and shinier. Because it is so heavy, it works best mixed with lighter oils rather than used alone.
5. Sweet almond oil (badam)
A gentle, lightweight oil with vitamin E. Almond oil helps seal in moisture and smooth the hair surface, which reduces frizz and makes combing easier.
6. Flaxseed (alsi)
Flaxseed is naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids. In hair care it is valued for adding softness and natural shine.
7. Black seed (kalonji)
Kalonji has a special place in desi households and traditional remedies. Black seed oil is used for scalp care and is a favourite in many family hair-oil recipes. We have a full guide to it in the Journal.
8. Rosemary
Rosemary has become one of the most talked-about hair ingredients in the world. It has a fresh, invigorating scent and is traditionally used to stimulate the scalp during massage. Read our rosemary guide for what the research does and does not say.
9. Onion (pyaz)
Onion is a traditional desi favourite for hair care, especially for the roots. Many families still swear by onion juice. In an oil blend you get the tradition without having to grate an onion yourself.
10. Pumpkin seed (kaddu)
Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc and fatty acids. Pumpkin seed oil adds nourishment to a blend and is increasingly popular in modern hair care.
11. Fenugreek (methi)
Methi seeds have been soaked and used in hair masks across Pakistan and India for generations. They are valued for conditioning and scalp care.
12. Vitamin E
An antioxidant that helps protect oils from going rancid, and that helps hair feel less dry. It is a small addition that makes a blend more stable.
Why use a blend instead of single oils?
Each oil has a different texture and job. Castor is thick; sesame is light; coconut conditions; mustard warms. Mixing them yourself means buying a shelf full of bottles and guessing the ratios. A well-made blend balances heavy and light oils so it spreads easily, washes out properly and gives you the benefits of all twelve in one step.
A gentle reminder: natural does not always mean suitable for everyone. If you have a sensitive scalp or allergies (for example to nuts or mustard), do a patch test first and check the full ingredient list.
